Well, a few sips of soft drink might not seem like you’ve fallen off the health bandwagon, but the negative effects linger long after your buzz subsides. To celebrate the arrival of summer (minus the sugary drinks), we’ve invited one of our fave foodie bloggers to share her natural lemonade recipe.

Who better to come up with a delicious alternative to traditional soft drink? It’s time to stock up on natural ingredients, whip up this wholesome lemonade and take a fresh jug to your next party.
As the weather gets warmer, sometimes there’s nothing better than a cool glass of fizzy lemonade.
Or is there?
Soft drinks are probably one of the least healthy choices we can reach for to quench our thirst. Two ingredients in particular are actually quite deleterious to our health. If you are reaching for a diet soft drink, which uses the chemical additive aspartame as a sweetener, you could suffer from any number of nasty effects, such as headaches, fatigue, insomnia, moodiness, foggy memory, gut issues, and even weight gain! Aspartame actually trips up the signals in your brain that tell you that you’re full, leading you to consume far more than you actually need. Supersize soda anyone?!
The second nasty in soft drinks is high fructose corn syrup (HRCS) – a highly refined, cheap, fructose-glucose liquid sweetener derived from corn, which wreaks havoc on your metabolism. It causes a huge spike in your blood sugar levels and is quickly stored as fat if you aren’t able to burn the energy straight away. HFCS is simply a fast track to heart disease, obesity, diabetes, increased bad cholesterol levels, liver problems and cancer among others.
It’s not all doom and gloom though – you can easily make yourself a Glow-ji Lemonade out of a few simple ingredients – that will do the exact opposite of those harmful health effects mentioned above!
This homemade beauty tonic will help slow the aging process down – high in antioxidants, it protects against sun damage and fights free radicals that contribute to the visible signs of aging. Long considered a beauty food in Traditional Chinese Medicine, the goji berry is abundant in Vitamin A to help protect our eyes and keep them pretty and shiny. A rich source of Vitamin C, it helps boost collagen production for supple skin, while the Vitamin E content prevents premature aging.
With more than 30 essential and trace minerals such as zinc, calcium, copper, selenium and iron, and 18 amino acids, its no wonder these little guys are a girl’s best friend.
The other main ingredient in this drink is citrus – including citrus peel. Lemons and limes add to the Vitamin C (supple skin!) content, whilst including the zest of the grapefruit will actually help to reduce cellulite. The zest contains volatile oils that work to dissolve fatty deposits and detoxify the body.
Tip: find yourself some grapefruit essential oil to burn at home to naturally lift your spirits.
Glow-ji Lemonade (perfect for supple skin, shiny eyes and smooth thighs)
This simple tonic is the ultimate way to hydrate and stay gorgeous this summer.
What you’ll need:
Glow-ji Lemonade: A Natural Recipe
Total Time: 20 minutes
Servings: Serves 1-2
- 1/3 cup goji berries, soaked in a little warm water until soft
- Juice of half a lime
- Juice of half a lemon
- A few tablespoons of grapefruit juice
- 1 teaspoon wild, organic Manuka honey
- 3/4 cup water
- Slices of lemon and lime
- Zest of half a grapefruit
- Blend goji berries, lemon, lime and grapefruit juice, honey and water
- Strain through a sieve to remove the tough goji berry seeds
- Serve poured over a tall glass of ice, with lots of lemon and lime slices throughout
- Add the grapefruit zest, give it a little swirl and enjoy!
