Move over Acai – there’s new superfruit on the scene, Maqui!
Ever tried Acai? If you’re scratching your head thinking “huh”? Acai (Ah-sigh-ee) berries come from acai palm trees found in Central and South America. They have been labeled a superfood for anti-aging, weight loss, and overall health. In recent years Acai has popped up in smoothie shops and health food stores nation wide, commonly being served in smoothies or as an ‘Acai bowl’ – a blended mix topped with fresh fruit and granola (see imagery).
As much as we LOVE Acai, there is a new kid on the block that deserves a warm welcoming. The Maqui berry (pronounced “Mah-kee”). It is no wonder that with its high level of antioxidants, this beautifully deep royal purple Maqui berry is becoming so popular!

Studies have shown that Maqui (hailing from the Patagonia Region of Chile) has the highest ORAC score ever found among fruits – with its antioxidant property double of acai and four times higher than blueberries, it’s no surprise this fruit is so mighty!
Oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) analysis has shown that berries, fruits, legumes and vegetables have high antioxidant properties and can be powerful free radical scavengers.
Free radicals affect our cells every day as the body ages and can contribute to problems such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and gastrointestinal disorders.
Studies have shown that regular daily consumption of antioxidants will decrease your chances of illness later in life by regulating your internal environment to maintain a stable and relatively constant condition such as temperature and pH.
Not only that but Maqui is jam packed with anthocyanins – defence against the cold, sunshine and mountainous terrain it is exposed to – the small powerful berry is able to protect itself against these and in turn, Maqui boasts an ability to protect you from high blood pressure, arthritis, oxidative stress and atherosclerosis.
