Who doesn’t love a bliss ball? At the perfect size, the humble bliss ball makes the perfect snack to satiate any sweet craving as soon as it strikes. But these little guys do have a short coming, and it’s often in the preparation. So if you’ve put off trying your hand at a batch of bliss balls for lack of access to a blender, THIS is your chance! All you need is a packet of Fit Mix, some coconut oil and honey… Yes, the ridiculously talented Sally O’Neil of The Fit Foodie Blog (check her 10-minute dinner recipe here), launched a DIY bag of bliss ball mix that health nuts around the world cannot get enough of.
the concept of fit mixes is seriously genius, How did the idea first come about?
When I travelled to Australia from the UK my interest in healthy living was sparked, so I swapped the chocolate bars for store-bought bliss balls to kick my sweet tooth. I quickly realised they were packed with dates – high in fructose which gave me blood sugar spikes and more cravings. I thought making my own would solve that, but every recipe I found required a blender which I didn’t have access to. I had to solve my own pain point. The result was Fit Mixes – fructose free, high protein DIY mixes that are ready to make with just a bowl + spoon. Healthy snacks in under 5 minutes, for under $1 per ball. It made a lot of sense to me, and seemingly since they launched it’s been super popular with other people too!
You really managed to find a niche, what do you credit the success of fix mixes?
Gut instinct. I’m still blown away that Fit Mixes has seen such great success. I broke every rule in the book – I did no market research, no competitor evaluation, and even launched without a business plan. I trusted my gut. I knew if I had struggled to find simple and convenient clean treats, other people were experiencing the same thing. What else did I need to know? That’s what I based my whole business on.
How fast was your expansion? Did you originally start making the mixes in your kitchen and selling them at the markets?
Fit Mixes launched just over 12 months ago, and I’ve been so pleasantly surprised at the level of demand for my little protein-packed mixes! I was initially selling a range of hand-made clean treats at Bondi Markets using recipes from the blog, but after just a few attempts and sell-out stalls I knew I had to think bigger. Fit Mixes went into production in a small rented commercial kitchen, where I would stand for hours and hand-mix every pack, then label and seal them all. After contacting a my favourite health stores to see if they would stock the mix, I was approached by a distributor to look after orders directly. I now have 5 distributors working for me across Australia – they are absolutely wonderful!
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt in the process?
Just start. You’ll never know what you can do and what you are capable of until you do it. No amount of planning will prepare you for the highs and lows of actually putting your dreams into action, so just jump right in. There’s never a perfect time – there will always be financial concerns, conflicting life priorities and a busy schedule, but your market is moving forward whilst you are stood still. Get stuck in and refine as you go!
How many stores are you currently stocked in?
I have 85 physical stores Australia-wide, and am super excited to have have just welcomed the first international store in Singapore. There’s also a growing set of online retailers, alongside the original Fit Mixes online store. It’s wonderful to see Fit Mixes growing so rapidly, and am looking to work with stores in NYC + LA in the coming months.
What’s your ultimate goal for the business?
My ultimate goal is to inspire people to lead the best lives they can through nourishing food, without missing out on the dishes they love. Let’s be honest, who has the time to spend 5 hours dehydrating a raw pizza for dinner?! My real passion is making health food convenient and accessible to everyone. The Fit Foodie Blog is dedicated to just that – offering up tips and a mountain of quick nutritious recipes, with Fit Mixes being the physical manifestation of that. I love that people can try a slice (or ball!) of the Fit Foodie lifestyle at home.
What’s the most important message you would like to share with other women in business?
Stay open to every opportunity. Say yes, and work out a way to make it happen when the time comes. Fear of the unknown will only be conquered by trial, (sometimes) error, and most importantly, experience.
The Fit Foodie (aka Sally O’Neil), is on a mission to prove that healthy and nutritious doesn’t have to be boring – and that even while staying in shape you can have your cake and eat it too. After losing 14kg after adopting a healthier lifestyle, Sally has now launched her own range of Protein Ball Mixes: Fit Mixes, so that you too can make healthy treats at home without the fuss.
