When it comes to Active Living, we here at Team MNB are a nosey curious bunch, and we LOVE hearing how other people embrace our fabulous philosophy every day. So for all you soapie fans, boy do we have a treat for you, because Home & Away star Cassie Howarth’s trainer Ben Lucas from Flow Athletic, spilled all his secrets on how he helps her maintain those killer curves. Despite her hectic filming schedule, she still manages to get her workouts in… Gold Star! Ben was nice enough to reveal her biggest tips and tricks for staying in shape as well as also share her training plan, that you can save, print and throw in your gym bag #noexcuse
STRENGTH TRAINING
Cassie comes from a dancing background and is quite lithe so I focus on prescribing strength workouts to add definition to her body. As Cassie is time poor, we try to cover the strength components of her workout week in her PT sessions. Strength training is incredibly important – it boosts your metabolism and gives your body tone and shape. As you can see with Cassie’s body, it does NOT add bulk!
CARDIO
I am a huge believer in having a holistic approach to your workouts, so for every strength session, you should do cardio and a lengthening session such as yoga or dance. Cassie takes care of the cardio component of her workout week in her spare time. She does hill sprints and interval sprints which are a quick and effective way of burning fat. She also benefits from dance classes.
FOOD PREP
As Cassie works long hours, I advise her to prepare 4-6 meals the night before a shoot. This will mean that the meal is accessible and she is far more likely to stick to the plan!
REST AND RECOVERY
When you’re eating well and recovering, that’s when your muscles grow. Cassie is busy so I tell her to take a rest day if her body doesn’t feel up to training. I think it’s important for us to listen to our body more because if you are completing HIIT and strength work every day despite being tired you may find that you burnout.
CUT THE RUBBISH
Cut the rubbish and that means the little snacks in between! 1 piece of chocolate here, a couple of chips there- it all adds up. There’s always snack food available on set – that’s why food prep is so important.
