Christmas may be over, but with New Years Eve just around the corner, it’s safe to say the silly season is still in full swing. This time of year only happens once, right? So it’s totally fine to kick up your heels and make merry (Active Living is all about balance after all). But if you’ve woken up feeling a little foggy after one too many cocktails, don’t give into temptation and reach for the greasy pizza your body is so desperately yearning for… it’s only going to make things worse. Believe it or not, curing a hangover the natural way is much more effective than tucking into a kebab, so the next time you’re feeling a little under the weather, try your hand at one of these natural hangover cures that actually work.
A night on the margeritas might be your idea of hydration at the time, but it will actually end up stripping your body of most of its water… so replenishing those lost stores is absolutely crucial. Cue coconut water. Packed full of electrolytes, potassium and sodium, 100% coconut water (the kind with no added sugar or flavouring) is actually more effective at restoring hydration than most sports drinks. Can’t stand it on its own? Why not mix it in with some fruit and use it as the base for a smoothie – might we suggest The Green Dream – it certainly is the best way to start the day!
Epsom Salt Bath
When in doubt, bath it out! Nothing repairs the body quite like rest, and what’s more relaxing than a long hot soak in the tub? For the day after the night before, hold the bubbles and opt for Epsom Salts… the magnesium rich soluble salts are absorbed through the skin and speed up the bodies natural detoxification process to get you feeling back to your bubbly self in no time. Want to take it one step further? Add some fresh ginger to the bath to help sweat out any excess toxins that might still be lingering. Check out this recipe for our famous DIY muscle recovery soak.
While this is probably the absolute LAST thing you feel like doing, get over it and get moving. Alcohol is a depressant and as a result it slows your brain activity right down (don’t worry, there’s an actual scientific reason you may find yourself in some not so switched on situations at your Christmas party). Exercise produces endorphins, those feel good chemicals that pump through your body, helping you to turn that frown upside down. While a high intensity boxing class might be out of the question and further exacerbate your nausea, try and buck up enough to make it through a gentle walk or a refreshing swim. You’ll get all the good feels… promise.
B vitamins are essential for energy production, the functioning of your central nervous system as well as your general brain function. The problem? Vitamin B is heavily depleted by alcohol, so pumping your body back with b-rich foods will help you get your bounce back in no time. Instead of making a b-line for the nearest takeaway shop, make sure you throw back plenty of things like red meat, turkey, spinach, broccoli, eggs (you can’t go past this lazy girls green frittata), beetroot and whole sprouted grain bread, and if you find your energy is lacking, a B supplement should do the trick.
If you had a few too many last night, your body’s potassium level probably copped a bit of a blow, and the cheapest, quickest and most delicious way to restore it, is with a humble banana. Even the smallest changes in potassium levels can have a dire effect on your heart, nerves and muscles so it’s crucial to maintain healthy levels. If you can’t go it on it’s own, try whipping up our famous Espresso Banana Smoothie (the additional hit of espresso will help breathe you back to life).
Bubbly might be exactly the thing that got you into this cruel conundrum in the first place, but try backing up with a different kind of bubbly… a big ol’ glass of Kombucha. The fermented tea is a powerhouse of probiotics, good bacteria and B vitamins that will heal and repair any damage you may have done to your poor old gut. If you’re feeling up to it, you can even brew your own batch of Healthy Homemade Kombucha.
