If there’s one thing this wonderful world of ours needs an abundance of, it’s kindness. It’s the one currency we all have an infinite amount of, yet ironically it’s also the most underused exchange we offer one another. But why? The other day a stranger on the street complimented my outfit when I was walking through the city, and I was literally lost for words. Any onlooker would have thought I was just being told I was nominated for an Academy Award. While admittedly I am a dramatic person (so I’ve been told), it meant the absolute world to me that someone who had no obligation to do so, made the brave decision to compliment a complete stranger. The act of kindness shouldn’t be a shocking one, but on that day – I was shocked (in a good way of course). As I walked away grinning ear to ear, it dawned on me that even the smallest act of kindness can go a seriously long way – plus it doesn’t cost a thing and takes next to no effort at all.
One of the first lessons my mother ever taught me was ‘if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all’ and it’s something she still drums into me even to this day – and I know I’m not the only one. And she’s totally right. There’s enough bad in this world that unfortunately is completely out of our control, and we don’t need to add fuel to the fire. If there’s one thing we all have complete control over, it’s the way we treat each other, and every human being despite their age, race, religion, body type, social status, hair colour or sexuality deserves to be treated with kindness. So before you spit your words out, make sure you taste them, and if you don’t like them, there’s a good chance no one else will. That doesn’t just mean face to face; the same rules apply to texting, social media and email. Think before you post – there’s a human behind that image you’re about to tear to shreds.
Furthermore, kindness is one of those things that’s just like laughter in that it’s completely contagious – and who wouldn’t want to be the one to spread that? The more you give it, the more you’ll not only receive it, but the more others will give it too. So start the cycle today… here are a few easy and totally free ways to do so. Let someone in who’s trying to merge in the traffic, post something positive on social media, put your phone down and really listen when someone is talking to you, compliment someone on their outfit, offer to make someone a cup of tea next time you head to the kitchen, leave someone a warm fuzzie on their desk before they get to work or call someone just to let them know you’re thinking of them.
Smile more and scowl less, post positivity not negativity, lift others up instead of bringing them down and last but certainly not least… always be a little kinder than necessary!
