I am dedicating my first ever Thankful Thursday to my SOS in the hope I can inspire others girls to have a seriously amazing sidekick with you every step of the way!
The term SOS was founded after a really insightful self-love seminar one night back in March where the always amazing Melissa Ambrossini, Tara Bliss and Jess Aincough discussed how they had overcome self-esteem issues. My friend and I walked away saying we had a lot of work to do on ourselves – to shut up with all the self-hating and to really start loving ourselves and life completely. From this single moment of realisation, the SOS system was born.
My friend and I vowed to support one another with our goals, through moments of weakness and relish in the times of greatness each and every day. We understood that a little help along the way (a push and a shove here and there) was just what a girl needed to get on with achieving her best, most beautiful life.
Since we have both discovered just how essential the SOS system has been to getting more out of our lives – an SOS puts things into a much more clearer perspective, providing a non-jaded answer to those always rather biased questions we tend to ask ourselves. I have found myself in many moments where a bit of real talk was required, and vice versa; to know you can count on a friend who is going through the similar trials and tribulations of being a 20-something girl in this sometimes-unforgiving world is really reassuring.
But if you’re reading this trying to figure out who your SOS is or want to know how to get one, the truth is, you probably don’t need to look too far – think about a friend who you’ve joined forces with on your way to living your best life. 9 times out of 10 she too is on a journey and you’re already unintentionally being an SOS to one another.
Your SOS is that friend you meet at 5am Cycle Class. She’s the friend who runs at the back of the pack with you; the friend who will remind you of your goals when things seem too tough. An SOS is a friend who subtlety hints that the protein packed salad is the better choice on the menu, but is willing to go halves in a block of dark chocolate with you later. But most importantly your SOS is that friend who is only a phone call away with a mind full of wisdom and a heart full of gold, ready to listen and pick you up again.
So to provide you with a bit of guidance on how an SOS can really save your soul, I share with you below a few of my moments to prove how utterly thankful I am to have one.
Inspiration In My Inbox
Opening up my outlook every morning to spammy newsletters and too many “to-dos” is a chore, but when you discover those hidden gems of inbox inspiration your day really can be made. It can be anything from a forwarded link to a great new blog, a reader’s digest of amazing information or a great piece of wisdom, beautiful image or a quote from your SOS. Try it – randomly send a short and sweet email to your SOS… it will help brighten her day and provide her with the inspiration to keep on going!
It’s true, sometimes boys can get in the way of living your best, most beautiful life – but really, it shouldn’t stop you from achieving greatness. I was going on a date one night and my SOS thankfully sent a text message right on cue with the inspiration needed to kick some serious first-date butt. It was in this moment I remembered I just needed to be the best version of myself. Simple really. For this, I had my SOS to thank for acknowledging my distress signal and sending out a little ‘self-love’ flame. Thanks girl!
Being prepared is the single, most golden rule to ensuring you squeeze all of the goodness out of your day – this rule is especially paramount when it comes to nourishing. So take it from me when I say there is no worse feeling then finishing a super productive day only to get home to slave away in the kitchen because you weren’t prepared. Thankfully, I can call on my SOS to whip up a Paella Feast (MNB approved recipe this way). Not only did I get to relish in a delicious home cooked meal that warmed my insides, I also got to sit around with a bunch of other great friends, laughing, chatting and having a good time. Nourishing with wholesome food and amazing company is hands down one thing to be super thankful for, and I have my SOS to extend this gratitude to!
I really do encourage you to COMMENT below with your own SOS moments or even forward this article on to your friends to show your thankfulness to their amazing selves.
