3 Steps to re-write your inner stories and take back authorship of your life
Have you ever had the thought that you aren’t enough? Pretty enough to date that hunky guy. Smart enough for your dream job. Rich enough to buy into that gorgeous, leafy-green suburb.
I’d hazard a guess as to say that most of you are reluctantly raising your hand right about now. Yep, me too. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be this way.
I’m here to share with you 3 tried and tested ways that you can begin re-writing your inner dialogue today. Grab out your trusty journal and get ready for a mindful makeover!
Recognise and accept
Becoming aware of the thoughts that are on repeat inside your head is the first and most important step. Initially, this seems quite simple and easy to achieve, yet most of us are unconsciously allowing these less than ideal thought patterns to run our days without question.
During our first session, I always encourage my coaching clients to begin taking note of when limiting thoughts pop up and what those thoughts are. This practice always leads to a deeper level of understanding and knowledge of themselves, and often, an overwhelming sense of personal compassion.
It is so important to cut ourselves some slack when we start to awaken to our inner stories. We are all doing the best we can with what we know. Sometimes we have been running these unconscious programs for years, or even decades, and now that we recognise this, we can start to build a new, more rewarding habit.
Choose again
Taking back authorship of your life means that you get to decide which stories you are going to subscribe to and which you are going to let go of. One way of choosing again, is to write down all of those limiting stories that you uncovered in Step 1. Underneath each of these, choose a more rewarding and uplifting one.
For example:
Limiting thought: I’m not thin enough.
New thought: My body supports me in all that I do.
You might also like to turn these new, more empowering thoughts into affirmations which can be stuck up on your mirror, or made into the background on your phone as reminders. This will help your new ideology to sink in and become your new norm.
Act ‘as if’ this is already your belief
We strengthen our beliefs by acting upon them. If you find yourself comparing your body to others, replying to compliments with ‘Thanks but I’m still not a size 8…’ or criticising yourself for eating another chocolate Easter bunny- your new story isn’t going to feel true for you anytime soon.
Try instead, acting as if you already believe your newly created stories. You could thank your body daily for helping you to get where you need to go, you could up your water intake for extra support or even ask your partner to give you a gentle massage whilst tuning into the pleasure that your body is delivering.
This is a truly powerful step, and one that can even be quite fun if you allow it to be!
Because who says we need to wait until we’re ready?! I say let’s live the lives we want to live now!
