Putting Yourself First

putyourselffirst

Be the number one person in your own life.

Big statement, don’t you think? But the thing is, you should be. If you learn to put yourself first and prioritise your own happiness, you will find that those around you in turn become happier too. Your health, your wellness and your ability to choose YOU will lead to so much abundance. It’s not about being selfish, it’s actually about realising and unlocking your own potential.

As women, we are most often the ones to make sacrifices. From big things like our careers to little things like choosing to eat the slightly overcooked piece of toast for ourselves – we are always putting others wants and needs before our own. (I mean, who actually wants to eat burnt toast?!) This level of selflessness can be a truly beautiful thing because we all need to practice gratitude and the art of giving. But, are we constantly giving away too much and forgetting to put our needs at the top of our never-ending list of ‘Things To Do’?

Ask yourself this question. While you’re busy looking after everyone – who’s looking after you? The answer to this question has to be you. At the end of the day, we only have ourselves. We only have one body to live in, one mind to develop, one appetite to nourish and one life to live. It’s high time we all start putting ourselves first in some way, every day. Not just for our own benefit, but for the benefit of our friends, families and colleagues. This is about more than just a little bit of ‘me time’ every day. This is about figuring out how you ultimately want to balance your life.

Here’s a simple way to take a step back and look at it.

Ask yourself:

What are the things that make you feel good?

1.      Spending time at the beach

2.      Picnic at the park.

3.      Cooking up a storm at home.

4.      Working out.

5.      Seeing my girlfriends.

How often do you do them?

1.       Once every 2-3 months.

2.       Three times a year.

3.       Almost every night.

4.       Three times a week.

5.       Once a fortnight.

How often do you WANT to do them?

1.       Once a month, at least.

2.       Once a month.

3.       Almost every night. (no adjusting required!)

4.       Five times a week.

5.       Once a week.

Once you have finished writing down each list, adjust accordingly.

So, is it time to weigh up your lists and bring back the balance a little? Don’t be afraid of being your own numero uno… After all, there is only one of you.
