Do you always seem to attract people who need healing on a level and find yourself listening to people’s stories of suffering, being asked for advice even if you really have no experience in their issue?
Answering ‘Yes’ likely indicates you are an Empath.
The difference between someone who can show empathy and being an Empath is that an Empath will not only intuitively know/feel the energy but will also absorb the energy into their own and become affected.
Empath’s have the ‘Healer’ blueprint and therefore feel almost called to help and do find it gratifying. However, all Healer’s must care for themselves to avoid the risk of suffering, otherwise they are no use to anyone!
Here are the 5 key things you should know about being an Empath:
Cleansing
Just like you cleanse your face of makeup, dead skin and dirt etc, you need to cleanse your energy of what is not yours and what no longer serves you (i.e. stagnant energy). By intentionally cleansing your energy daily, you restore your natural energy. Not only does this help you to feel better overall but it helps you continue to help others with optimal energy. The simplest way to cleanse is in the shower with this statement – “Please wash away what’s not mine. Please wash away what no longer serves me”. Other ways include using Sage or Incense and salt baths.
Grounding
We are all supported by the spiritual realms above and the earthly realms below and while most of us practice some form of connecting to our higher selves like through meditation and/or mindfulness, not many of us intentionally practice grounding. Grounding practiced daily brings a sense of knowing that we are supported at all times and don’t need to go it alone. It helps balance our energy and allows us to keep our authenticity and safety at the forefront. Preferably in the morning, place your feet flat on the ground and imagine the soles of your feet rooting themselves into the ground while saying – “Feet connect to Mother Earth”. You can do this wherever you are, however, bonus energy for if you are actually outside connecting with Mother Earth!
Protection
To prevent having your energy taken advantage of, an intentional protection ritual is a must! Think of it as a shield or bubble charged with the job to keep your energy safe. A couple of ways to incorporate it include imagining yourself in a bubble of white light where you feel safe and protected or try imagining being inside of a transparent gold pyramid. Note that the sphere shape of the bubble has a slight nod to the intention of being protected by the grounded, earthly realms and the pyramid relates more to the protection we receive from the spiritual realms we point to above.
Boundaries
We can’t help, heal or save everyone! Feeling the suffering of another and feeling helpless to do anything about it is a common challenge. As an Empath it can be heartbreaking to come to terms with this at times. Understanding that discernment can be the Empath’s best friend is advice to heed. When we put boundaries around our expectations of ourselves and around when, how people can ask for our support it allows us to have clarity around the situation and knowing the right course of action is easier.
Expression
It’s in our nature. It’s a part of us that needs to be honoured and expressed. When we suppress our natural ability as an Empath, we can quickly fall into low vibrational habits and become miserable. Helping people is what we do best and finding our own individual ways to express this purpose (safely) will keep us balanced and feeling fulfilled. If you are pondering a career change or in the processes of deciding which road to travel down, consider choosing from these more traditional careers to feel fulfilled in your professional life – Nurse, Alternative Therapist, Psychologist, Chiropractor etc. Believe it or not, Hairdressers, Beauty and Massage Therapists are also healer blueprint vocations. Volunteering in aged care, disability services or animal shelters are other ways to honour your empathic gifts.
