It’s no secret that the silly season is a time for overindulging, which means sometimes your MNB routine can fall by the wayside. In prep for a little indulging of her own, our leading lady Lorna Jane Clarkson decided to try a gentle cleanse. We interview all about it to find out the verdict… would she, or wouldn’t she do it again?
Just like fashion, the health food industry has trends that come and go quicker than you can say ‘kale chips’, but not all of them are worth investing your time and energy in. But one that managed to pull me in was a good old fashioned juice cleanse, a controversial topic I know but hey, like I always say – I’m always willing to try anything once!
Those of you who follow me on instagram (@ljclarkson) will know that last week was my 50th birthday… a milestone that’s totally worthy of celebration! And what’s the best thing about celebrating… chocolate! Yep, it might come as a bit of a shock to you, but I have a HUGE sweet tooth and my ultimate weakness is chocolate…and peanut butter (I may or may not have had a few helpings of my famous raw chocolate chia cake). But the way I see it is; you only turn 50 once, so you may as well enjoy it! Even though I still embrace Active Living when I’m on holidays I truly believe that allowing yourself to indulge without guilt every now and then is a super important part of maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle!
When I got home from my week long island adventure (a very long time coming I assure you) I found that my energy levels weren’t as high as usual, and I was craving sweet food more often (like all the time). So, I thought a juice cleanse would be the perfect way to get me back to my bright, bubbly and bouncy self – just in time to tackle the busiest time of the year for Lorna Jane! The Christmas period! But of course, I did it the Lorna Jane Clarkson way!
To get my head in the game for the cleanse that lasted from Tuesday-Thursday; I did some preparation to get my mind and body ready for three days of fasting! On Monday I cut out gluten, dairy and meat and nourished with two juices, two salads and two soups throughout the day, all vegan! I also kick started the day by making my own ‘Energize’ water from lemon, stevia, cayenne pepper and filtered water which was refreshing and super hydrating!
Once I started the cleanse I was allowed six juices per day which I drank in the following order! For the juices that didn’t have any dietary fibre or nuts added to them, I decided to add a teaspoon of either chia seeds or psyllium husks to keep me regular and also keep my energy levels up so I could tackle my meetings and stay on top of my busy schedule… as well as being able to exercise which is a non-negotiable part of my daily routine! While I was cleansing I kept my move routine gentle and opted for things like walking, yoga and some slow stretching.
- Energise (Lemon, Stevia, Cayenne Pepper, Filtered Water)
- Love (Beetroot, Carrot, Ginger, Apple)
- Joy (Kale, Cucumber, Cos Lettuce, Apple, Mint)
- Strength (Banana, Spinach, Apple juice, Chia Seeds, Barley Grass, Wheat Grass, Filtered Water)
- Wisdom (Lentils, Coconut Oil, Ayurvedic Spices, Himalayan Salt, Filtered Water) (A delicious dinner)
- Peace (Cashew, Vanilla, Maca Powder, Dates, Filtered Water) (A yummy dessert!)
My body responded super well to the cleanse! I felt AMAZING. My energy levels were up and I actually felt even better than I did when I was on holidays and eating everything! My stomach felt flatter after only the first day but the most surprising thing was I couldn’t believe how little I actually missed food – I can honestly say I never really felt hungry because there was always a juice to reach for! When the cleanse officially finished on Thursday I wanted to continue to ease off it slowly, so from Friday-Sunday I went back to my vegan diet of two juices, two soups and two salads. My appetite was SO much smaller than it usually is so they were very small portion sizes, but I have to admit, I did enjoy chewing again!
Overall, I got exactly the result I was looking for! Before my cleanse I was looking for something sweet everyday, you couldn’t stop my spoon reaching for the peanut butter jar. But now, I can go a couple of days where I will completely skip dessert and not even miss it! My temptations are gone, just in time for the Christmas celebrations which is good news for my best bikini body self! The only person who seemed to suffer was my poor husband Bill who had to cook his own meals so I wouldn’t be tempted to sneak a little taste like I usually do!
