How many times have you found yourself in the midst of a supremely intense workout where the thought of just one more burpee is enough to tip you over the edge and push you to the brink of tears? What if I told you that tears were the objective of the workout? Well, there’s a brand new workout on the scene that does just that… The Class. Founded by Taryn Toomey, The Class is a 75-minute sweat sesh that’s come a long way since its humble beginnings and has moved from the basement of her trendy Tribeca apartment to a studio on Broadway… Go girl! Fusing elements of yoga, weight training and cardio, not only does this workout rev the heart rate and burn some serious energy, but it also brings many of its sweaty participants to tears by providing a safe space for emotional release.
The high flying NYC Fashion Exec turned Yogi works to break through both physical and mental stagnation through varying movement sequences and a carefully curated playlist. One of the regular participants summed it up perfectly when she described it as “bootcamp meets therapy”. After launching the class in 2011, word spread quickly and it has now attracted a loyal following of dedicated active women, including the likes of Naomi Watts, Gisele Bündchen and Christy Turlington. Holy supermodel, where do we sign up? Combing the physical with the emotional, the workout is comprised of sharp cardio bursts like jumping jacks, plyometric work and jumping jacks with softer sequences including meditation leaving participants with long, lean and oh-so strong bodies (Taryn is case in point… who actually looks that good in all white?)
The gruelling workout goes for 75-minutes with the class wrapping up with a ‘heart opening’ sequence, bringing many people some much needed emotional relief.
Would you give it a go?
