As human beings, we spend our lives in perpetual pursuit of perfect relationships. Whether it’s the perfect boss, the perfect hairdresser or the perfect barista, there are few of us who are willing to settle for less than the best when it comes to affairs of the heart, and why should we have to? If you find yourself constantly trying people on for size in the hope that they’ll be the perfect fit for your happily ever after, don’t worry, you’re not alone, especially when searching for that special someone who is outstandingly hard to find… the perfect Personal Trainer, or as we call them, the PPT.
Much like the perfect boyfriend who has drive, determination, a good work ethic, kindness, nice arms, a sense of humour and is strong enough to carry me both physically and emotionally (who says I’m too picky?), the PPT is a hard thing to find and sometimes you’ve gotta kiss a few frogs before finding your prince. For years I found myself emotionlessly flitting from one trainer to another, with no desire to settle down or make it official… until I met, Matt, my knight in shining lycra and the trainer of my dreams. They say when you meet the one you just know, and boy did I know! After years of failed relationships – each more disappointing than the last – Matt helped me curb my commitment issues for good and proved that the perfect personal trainer really does exist.
As they say, one woman’s trash is another woman’s treasure and just because you’ve had a bad experience with one PT, it doesn’t mean they’re bad at what they do and you should swear them off forever, it just means they weren’t the right fit for you. So in an effort to save you from unwarranted heartache and disappointment, we’ve compiled a list of non-negotiable that all girls should follow when it comes time to seeking out your PPT.
Non-negotiable qualities for the PPT
They don’t beat around the bush, nor do they lie to you about your performance or results (or lack thereof). A PPT will always tell you the truth… even when you ask them if your butt looks big in those tights.
Look for someone who’s not going to give up when the going gets tough, and even when fatigue sets in and you throw yourself dramatically on the floor and refuse to do anymore, they won’t walk away. A PPT will pick you up push you to your absolute limits because they truly believe in you – maybe even more than you believe in yourself.
If there’s a lack of communication on either part, then it’s never going to work. Be honest and upfront with what you want out of the relationship so you both know what you’re getting yourselves into. Whether it’s increased cardio fitness or more muscle tone, opening up the lines of communication up front will set the foundation for a solid relationship.
You know you’ve found ‘The One’ when…
They text you at ungodly times of the day and night: When your phone starts vibrating at 4:35am, without so much as opening one eye, you know it’s your trainer checking in to make sure you didn’t hit snooze… sprung.
Your thoughts are in sync: At the exact moment you consider blowing off your session and blowing out with your friends, some kind of inspirational message hits your inbox like ‘broccoli might get stuck in your teeth, but fries get stuck on your butt’. HOW DID THEY KNOW?
They sometimes make you cry: Whether they’re torturing you with burpees, squat jumps or weighted lunges, sometimes it’s all just too much and before you know it, your emotions are free flowing out of your eyeballs. Pull it together girl and remember, it’s not because they hate you, it’s because they believe in you!
Some days you just can’t stand them: Now matter how much you love your PPT, some days you’d rather lick glass than head to a training session. Relationships take work, and on those not so good days, sometimes the only thing you can do is channel all of that negative energy into hurling your hardest upper cuts at the punching bag they’re holding… shhh.
You can’t picture your life without them: Looking back, it’s hard to believe there was once a time when your upper body lacked so much strength, one push-up required more effort than your senior exams and five minutes on the treadmill felt like you’d just run the New York Marathon. But all that changed when your PPT came along and seriously, how much better is life now?
So if you haven’t found your PPT yet, keep on looking, because I promise they’re out there!
