Sporty Sister of the Week: Jamie Louise Stevenson

No two stories are the same, as each of us tread our own path to creating our healthiest, happiest self.

Take Jamie Louise Stevenson for example. It might surprise you to learn that our glowing raw chef wasn’t always on the MNB bandwagon. After finding her own healthy balance at the age of 21,  she is now striving to enrich the lives of others with her unique food philosophy. In essence, Jamie’s soulful way of living stands for everything that melts our hearts.

This certified raw chef, yoga teacher, writer and entrepreneur is currently studying nutrition to further share her passion with as many people as she can. With a whole lot of experience, from both personal and acquired knowledge, this sporty sister reveals her secrets for living your best active life.

MNB: Hi there, welcome to our humble MNB! Tell us a little bit about yourself. What’s your story?

I am the owner and head chef of Brisbane’s first raw food café, ORAWGI. I also own Turf Studios, a yoga studio and events space that is right next door to ORAWGI! My mission in life is to provide the healthiest, safest and tastiest food that is sourced locally and ethically. Coming from a creative background, my joy for both movement and food stems from a deep belief that everything is art, the way we move, speak, eat and love…

 MNB: Where are you & what are you doing right now?

I am at my café, working on a few really exciting projects that include planning a trip to LA to film segments for a program a friend and I are working on which is set to launch in June of 2014! ORAWGI also does catering, workshops and hosts events at turf studios so there is always something exciting going on here!

MNB: Have you always been passionate about active living? What was the ‘uh ha’ moment for you…

No! If by active you mean parties, champagne and other poisons, then sure I was very passionate! Ha. My teens to early twenties were spent working in nightclubs and hanging out in Melbourne’s many laneway bars. When I met my fiancée Leigh at 21 everything changed almost over night! I went from high heels on the dance floor to barefoot on a yoga mat. I realised that my severe Endometriosis pain was responding well to yoga, meditation and healthy eating and ever since I have continued to seek new ways to nourish my body, mind and soul.

MNB: What does a typical day of MNB’ing look like in your world?

My day always starts the same way…

I drink a big glass of warm lemon water with MSM followed by a rebound on my mini trampoline; I love the feeling a good bounce gives me! It’s revitalising and gets all of my cells moving after a nights sleep. My morning yoga practice and meditation session is next and I follow that up with a big green smoothie.

I head into the café were I get to make amazing raw vegan treats and meet and serve the most wonderful people. I love getting to chat to the ORAWGI customers and learn how they got into raw food, how they heard about the cafe and share with them my story, it’s very inspiring. Roxy, our miniature Labradoodle is always great company and loves to go for walks.

I also like to spend an hour or so planning out the next day every night and any time I can bury my head into a book where I take the opportunity to enjoy a herbal tea and a raw treat, because although I am surrounded by the most luscious foods all day I am not really able to stop and eat so it’s usually juices, tonic teas and smoothies for me during the day. Leigh works just as much as I do so we make sure that we have a date night at least once a fortnight where we can leave our phones at home and enjoy some time alone and visit the theatre, restaurant or something adventurous.

MNB: Okay, so if you had to choose…what would be your top 3 ‘can’t live without’ foods of all time!
  1. Coconuts – because they are the best thing ever.
  2. Kale  – well, anything green really but I can never go past kale.
  3. Cacao – because it’s chocolate.
MNB: What are some healthy snacks we could find stashed in your handbag?

Activated nuts and dehydrated berries like white mulberries, goji and schizandra berries! I love putting the goji and schizandra in my green tea. I also always carry green powder sachets for a quick boost. I am really into tonic herbalism so I have 4 tinctures I wont go anywhere without: Reishi, Goji and Schizandra, Diamond Mind and Yin Replenisher (which is great for my endometriosis!).

MNB:  My everyday workout wear essentials are…

A crop under a racer back singlet, black tights and a cap or headband, my ASICS trainers and music!

MNB: I’m my happiest…

I am pretty happy in any situation! If it’s good I enjoy the moment, if it’s bad I open my mind and see what I can learn from the experience… However I am pretty buzzed when I am making raw food, serving those who love eating it and seeing the change it makes in their day! I put so much energy into the food I make and it’s the best feeling in the world knowing my customers get that energy out of the food we make.  There is so much joy in being a teacher, seeing the changes in your students and facilitating their growth. My teaching is a mutual gift – I feel like the teacher is so often the student.

MNB: The one thing I’m really trying hard to do right now is…

Stay organised! With so many projects on the go, staying on top of the individual needs of each is my biggest challenge right now. I am enjoying the process and learning new ways to be more structured.

MNB: Best advice you have ever been given?

This little gem was brought to my attention by my fiancé and it’s now my golden rule. My fiancé has been one of my greatest teachers.

MNB: To unwind after a hard day’s work I like to…

Listen to music! I love discovering new music from all eras, corners of the globe and genres. Spotify is a guilty pleasure and I can often spend hours creating new playlists. I like to walk on the grass barefoot and hang out with Leigh and Roxy, he is busier than I am so getting a moment alone together is really special… We love adventure so we often go for a bike ride, go hiking or most recently went skydiving!  There is never a dull moment.

MNB: My biggest beauty indulgence in life is…

I love facials! Due to my busy lifestyle my skin sometimes doesn’t get the attention it deserves so I am really really lucky to have one of the most wonderful facialists in Brisbane working out of Turf Studios! Natalie Sellars is amazing and I am pampered at The Beauty Box almost weekly!  Chemical free, of course! She shares the same ethos as me when it comes to wellness and truly believes beauty starts from what goes in. Her truly holistic approach is what keeps me going back for more!

MNB: I stay true to myself by…

Accepting that I am doing the best I can. I have taken on so much and it’s often overwhelming but I just try to remember that I am so lucky to do what I do, and that no body has higher expectations of me than I do! So it’s about chilling out and enjoying the ride, bumps and all!

MNB: My heart beats fast when…

I travel! I find it hard to keep my feet on the ground, I love to travel and I have this constant feeling of wanderlust. Luckily I get to travel often… I make sure to plan trips as often as possible so that I have something to look forward to that is just for me. When I am in Australia it’s all about work and when I travel I can switch off and be in the moment.

MNB: Any tips or advice you could give to our readers just starting on their healthy, active journey?

Try everything and explore everything on offer. You will meet new friends, find confidence in areas you never thought possible if you just take that leap into the unknown. Most importantly, remember that you are so worth it – and being happy within yourself isn’t just how you look in the mirror but how you feel when you move, think and speak.

I would also like to share an MNB smoothie with you…

You will need: 

  • ½ cup frozen blueberries
  • ½ frozen banana
  • 1 cup spinach
  • 400ml coconut water
  • 1 tsp. coconut oil
  • 1 tsp. rosehip powder
  • 1 tsp. spirulina
  • 1 tsp. Siberian ginseng
  • ½ tsp. maca powder
  • 1 tsp. bee pollen – to garnish

Steps:

Combine all ingredients into blender (except bee pollen). Once combined sprinkle the bee pollen over the top! This is an amazingly nutritious and delicious smoothie!

This beautifying smoothie is a great vitamin C source, protein packed and highly energizing. Its dark colour is so enticing and with every sip you can actually feel it revitalise and nourish your body.
