In this Monday Motivation, our guest writer Hayley Richardson gets back to basics and talks about really simplifying your life by seeking less of more. This is something we talk about a lot on the blog and can show Active Living in a whole new light. Giving more of yourself each and every day doesn’t necessarily mean cramming as much as humanly possible into your agenda, sometimes it can be slowing down the dial to make way for more meaningful and fulfilling rituals! Here’s some ways you can practice Active Living to add a little more oomph to your everyday mindset.
Our society places an abundance of emphasis on stretching and striving for more – in almost every aspect of life. From an early age, you’re programmed to believe you should work reaaaaaally hard, earn lots of money, and of course, be super thin and pretty. And when this fickle facade falls perfectly in place, you’ll live happily ever after, right?
What would life be like if you celebrate everything you already have and how beautiful and perfectly “imperfect” you already are?
I have an inkling that over-connectedness and fear of missing out (FOMO) is at the heart of the ‘more’ mentality, but the constant strive is tiring. We want to keep up with our besties, have what they have and belong to a collective that’s greater than ourselves. But where do we stop? Is more becoming too much, are we on the verge of excess, ready to retreat from the wants in our head and reconnect with what’s true in our heart? I believe we are.
Fortunately, there is a different way to live and the tides are starting to turn. It seems pop culture is honing in on wellness, and I have a sneaking suspicion this is more than a fleeting fad. Why? Because everywhere you look, people like you and me are shedding layers of excess and embracing a simpler way of life.
What’s shifting? We’re:
- Tuning out of our monkey minds and into the happenings of our hearts
- Trading booze-fuelled partying for sunrise yoga and green juice
- Dropping reality TV reruns to don our LJ and take up pilates, running and yoga
Even the Dalai Lama has weighed in, musing, “people are beginning to feel the limitation of material value… and are not necessarily happy deep inside.” Consequently, an increasing number of people are picking up healthy habits, caring more and consuming less. They’re taking a stand for Team Love, sending fear to the backbench and learning to spread their wings and soar.
If you want to be part of this liberating way of living, try these tips to get you started:
+ Choose Team Love: It all starts with you, beautiful. I often tell my clients that in order to really shine and beam out the good vibes, you have to start loving yourself first. Kickstart a love-laden dialogue and talk to yourself like you would to your bestie.
+ Take on Team Fear: Those pesky voices telling you ‘I’m not good enough’ or ‘Her downward dog is way better than mine’ are just sneaky, made-up voices that our minds have latched onto. Acknowledge them as thoughts, not truths, to weaken the power they hold in your mind.
+ Say thank you: Life becomes infinitely sweeter when you sport an attitude of gratitude. Even thanking your partner for something as seemingly insignificant as taking out the trash can quickly raise the mercury on the good vibes barometer.
+ Practice presence: With everything we need to consider, meditation, or stillness, encourages quieting of the mind. Send out a big ol’ Ommm to the Uni-verse and feel the trickle of calm swim through your veins.
+ Friendly food: When it comes to food, you can have your raw cheesecake and eat it too. Eat fresh foods and choose local, organic whole foods and ethically sourced grass-fed meat. Not only will your body reap the benefits, but your community and the environment will too.
+ Show up in the world: Be inspired to be your big, bold and beautiful self. That’s what the world needs to see!
And now, it’s over to you, sister…
What’s the first small step you will take, right now, to spark some lasting self and life love?
