Tell us a little bit about yourself. What’s your story?
I am a health and fitness enthusiast, a world explorer, and an art lover. I am living my passion and am inspiring others to do the same along the way.
Where are you & what are you doing right now?
Right now I am sipping on some tea, listening to the Bon Iver Pandora station, and working on my class plans for the week.
Have you always been passionate about Active Living? What was the ‘uh ha’ moment for you…
Being active has always been a part of my lifestyle, but I never thought it would end up being my career. Growing up my mom would always put on workout videos and do them in the living room. After watching her a few times, I started following the steps behind her, and started tagging along with her to step aerobics classes at our local gym.
Combined with my family’s passion for music, I soon found dance (by way of the Middle School drill team) and after a minor in Dance in college, I ended up traveling the world dancing for Celebrity Cruises. As I traveled, explored and danced, I discovered yoga (it was a perfect complement for dance). But it wasn’t until I moved to Scottsdale, AZ and found a wonderful yoga community that took me in when I decided to become a yoga teacher.
The more I taught, the more I noticed how yoga changed people. It helped them not only get stronger and feel better, but to overcome some of their mental barriers. I decided I didn’t want to stop at yoga. Working out, being active, practicing yoga is not just about burning calories and sweating. Yes, those are major positive side effects. But for a lot of us working out and practicing yoga is about facing fears and overcoming them.
It’s about surrounding yourself with a community of people that are trying to do just that, and are around you to support you on your journey. It’s about finding the confidence within yourself and acquiring the power to say that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to – not just on your mat or at the gym. Getting stronger and feeling better are just some of the perks! I knew that I wanted to be a part of that. I wanted to help people believe in themselves.
What does a typical day of MNB’ing look like in your world?
My typical day starts at 5am to teach a 6am class and between my morning and evening classes, I usually go for an afternoon hike or take a yoga class. I’ve been a vegetarian for about 6 years, so I eat lots of fruits, veggies, and plant based proteins. I choose foods that make me feel good and give me energy, but I add in a piece of chocolate here and there!
I believe in leading a life involving the things you feel passionate about and surrounding yourself with people you love who bring joy to your life. I know it’s a cliché, but money and success don’t really matter if you’re not passionate about your life or if you don’t have loving people to share it with.
I’ve been living by these three words lately. It’s quickly becoming my way of life.
1. Find your passion, your dream; what makes your heart sing.
2. Find a way to make it your life.
3. Live your dream and inspire others to do the same!
Okay, so if you had to choose… what would be your top 3 ‘can’t live without’ foods of all time!
- Dark chocolate
- Almond Milk
What are some healthy snacks we could find stashed in your handbag?
I almost always have either an apple or a banana in my bag. Also, most likely some almonds.
My everyday workout wear essentials are…
I’m my happiest…
…when I’m with my family. My dad, mom, and brother are not only my biggest supporters, but also my best friends. For that, I am extremely grateful!
I am also super happy whenever I get to spend some time near the ocean or in the mountains. Pure bliss for me is being outdoors, with the sun shining on my face.
The one thing I’m really trying hard to do right now is…
…meditate. I’m really good at motivating myself and others to move – to workout, hike, run, or practice yoga – but I’m not so good at slowing down and just focusing on my breath. Breathing during my physical yoga practice yes, but without moving, no. So one of my goals for this year is to take at least 5-10 minutes every day to just breathe, listen to music, or follow one of the many amazing guided meditations you can find online.
Best advice you have ever been given?
To trust and follow my dreams.
Every time that I have gotten an inkling to try something new, every time I set a new goal, and every time those goals seem unattainable and I encounter an obstacle; I hear those words in the back of my mind. I have THE most supportive parents in the world. I could not be more grateful to them. My mom and dad have always believed in me, and in whatever idea I get in my head (and let’s face it, not all of my ideas have been great ones or successful). Even when the journey becomes an obstacle course instead of a straight clear path with sunny blue skies, they simply tell me “Frances, you just have to trust in yourself. Just follow your dreams”.
To unwind after a hard day’s work I like to…
…watch an episode of “New Girl” or “Friends”. Sometimes it just feels good to sit back and laugh!
My biggest beauty indulgence in life is…
Getting my hair or my nails done; there’s nothing more relaxing for me. It’s great to feel pampered!
I stay true to myself by…
…checking in every once in a while. Let’s face it; almost all of us take on more than we can handle at one point or another.
This simple shift in my thoughts instantly changes my mood because I’m reminded that no one is making me do anything. I do it all because I love it. I also stay grounded by taking time to be on my yoga mat daily, which gives me a clear perspective.
My heart beats fast when…
- When I get the chance to travel to different countries and explore! I love going to new places and learning about their cultures. Meet the people who live there and experience their way of life, try their foods, and simply walk around and take it all in.
- When I’m on stage. There’s no feeling like being on stage, dressed up in costumes and make up, and having the lights shine on you while the audience enjoys the show.
- When I watch my clients overcome their fears and accomplish their goals. There’s nothing more rewarding than witnessing a client finally able to a push up after years of not being able to hold themselves up in a plank.
Any tips or advice you could give to our readers just starting on their healthy, active journey?
First, find someone that you trust to hold you accountable. It’s always good to work out with a buddy, or simply have someone you can talk to about your journey. Second, no goal is too high. Aim high, and trust yourself. Third, have fun! It’ll be easier to stick to a lifestyle you enjoy and look forward to.
Any Move Nourish Believe tips before we part?
Make “Move, Nourish, Believe” your daily mantra. Find ways to move throughout your day that make you happy so that it’s not just a work out, it’s your way of life. Nourish your body with foods that are going to help you feel great and work efficiently. Fuel your body to achieve greatness. Believe in yourself and honor yourself. By taking time each day to tell yourself that you are proud of everything that you are doing, you will start building that inner confidence and power. Little by little you will radiate that to others. It’s contagious.
One more thing: Live your truth! No matter if your life seems perfect at the moment, or if you’re going through a major cross roads stay true to yourself, your talents, your passions, your goals. Eventually, when the time is right everything really does fall into place. The most important thing is that you believed in yourself and stuck to it. Always, follow your heart.
