Meet Your Trainer – Grace Teale

Each month on the Active Living Program we feature amazing Cardio, Strength and Stretch Trainers.

Here on MNB’s ‘Meet Your Trainer’ series, we’ll introduce your trainers each month so you can get to know a little more about them.

This month, we have the wonderful Grace Teale guiding you through your Stretch workouts Woman in Lotus Position on Apple

How long have you been a trainer?

I practice yoga almost daily and I try to attend class as a student at least once or twice a week. I have been a yoga instructor now for almost two years.

What inspired you to become a trainer?

I attended my very first yoga class when I was sixteen years old. Back then, I attended a lot of dance classes and my teacher would always take us through stretches before and after class, and eventually it lead me to attending a yoga class.

At first, I really didn’t enjoy it, I found it very slow, boring and I quickly became disinterested! But over the years I found myself coming back to class and it wasn’t until after my third daughter was born that I really committed to a consistent practice. After years of pretty much hating my body and lots of negative self talk, I felt like I had somehow come home to myself. I knew I had to take this practice to others so that they too could feel this good.

What do you love most about what you do?

For me, the best part about being a yoga instructor is seeing my students come out of savasana looking rested, relaxed and rejuvenated. It is honestly so rewarding to know that I have made this small difference in someones day/week or even life!

I love seeing a beginner come into the studio and fall in love with yoga and transform the way they move, live and think. Being an instructor is a huge responsibility and privilege and one that I don’t take for granted.

What excites you the most about the Active Living Program?

The internet is a gold mine! There is a huge amount of information that can be accessed and all with just the click of a button (and it’s free!) The tricky part is finding good information and the Active Living Program offers just that.

Lorna Jane and her team have reached out to some of the best trainers, health coaches and nutritionists. I also love that LJ is committed to sharing practices, tips and guides to inspire, motivate and empower women.

Fun Fact!

I am actually really clumsy, I trip, slip and fall a lot! I don’t know what it is, but on the mat I feel like a graceful ballerina but in ‘real life’ I am actually pretty awkward.

I also happen to be a very messy eater, eating out in a nice restaurant is a challenge for me.

Favourite post workout snack:

After a yoga class I like to go for a raw treat and either an acai bowl or an acai smoothie. I also normally have a banana in my bag for when I am on the go.

If I am at home I usually whip together a berry smoothie consisting of blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, a banana, honey, coconut water and almond milk. It is delicious!

Favourite workout tunes:

At the moment I am listeing to Khalid, Drake, Lorde and anything that the Lana Del Ray puts out.

Sometimes during class I will play very traditional yoga music and other times if I am teaching a strong class you will hear Kanye West.

When I am in my car on a Friday, I will tune into B105 because they always play the best old school RnB.

Go to motivation: (how do you stay motivated when times are tough)

I love to read! Some of my favourite books are ‘Big Magic’ by Elizabeth Gilbert, ‘Mastering Your Mean Girl’ by Melissa Ambrossini, ‘The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success’ by Deepak Chopra and so much more!

Although I also enjoy reading books like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, I think it’s so important to read books that teach you something. If I am not in the mood to read, I like to watch to TED talks on YouTube or I listen to an audio book- a lot of the time I will listen to an audio book through headphones whilst my kids are asleep or I listen to them while I am driving to a class or doing the school run. I immediately feel excited and inspired.

How do you Move?

I practice mainly power yoga and ashtanga. Recently I have started adding more strength based exercises into my body by including hand weights, kettle bells and resistance bands.

I also have three girls so that keeps definitely keeps me on my toes! I like to head outdoors with my husband and my girls. On the weekends we head to the beach, to a playground or for a long walk in nature. I also have a Husky and he demands at least two (sometimes three) walks a day. If he doesn’t get walked then we hear about it (he howls until he gets his way).

How do you Nourish?

I love a hot meal! Some of my favourite dishes are from the Indian and the Italian cuisine.  I can’t go past a wood fire pizza or a vegetable lasagna. I also love curries and I eat a lot of rice!

I wish I could tell you that I have this amazing all organic and raw only diet but the truth is I just don’t! However, over the years and particularly after practicing yoga consistently- my diet has certainly improved

Since watching a very important film called ‘Earthlings’ (a documentary about the suffering endured by animals at factory farms, research labs and puppy mills) I cut meat out of my diet completely. This forced me to include a LOT more veggies in my diet and now I absolutely love them.

How do you Believe?

The first time I heard this quote from Napoleon Hill ‘Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve’  I was around 18 years old. It really stuck with me and ever since then, I have found it to be 100% true.

Whether you believe you can or not, it is already true. So go ahead and believe that good things are going to happen and are happening right now.

I am also a huge advocate of gratitude. Everyday I write down at least three things that I am grateful for. My gratitude list might look something like this- today I am grateful for; the baby who smiled at me in the coffee shop today, for the hubby packing my lunch, for the delicious meal at Mum’s and for the yummy stretches this morning. I believe that if you appreciate the little things in life, the big things will follow.

I am very much a visual learner so I have a vision board in my home office filled with pictures of places I’d like to travel to, goals I’d like to achieve and people that I’d like to meet.

About four years ago, I printed a picture of a yoga instructor teaching to a large group of students and placed a picture of my face over the top of the instructors head. That was the beginning of my goal to become a yoga instructor.

Fast forward years later, it manifested into reality. So I like to think that right now, I am living my dream.
