This girl is positively glowing, and beaming with health, you can’t help but think… what’s her secret?

Perhaps it’s her renowned glowing Green Smoothie (we’re sipping that one right now), or her dedication to Vinyasa yoga that give her that bright eyed sparkle. Whatever it is, all we know is we want some of her soul-shining wellness!

Kimberly’s holistic living philosophy is in high demand and we feel so honoured to chat health, wellbeing and all things MNB with her. Read her personal journey to healthy living, from her junk food filled college days, to her incredible around-the-world trip and new life filled with inner peace.

MNB: Hi there, welcome to our humble MNB! Tell us a little bit about yourself. What’s your story?

I’ve had an incredible journey so far, which includes backpacking around the world for over three years and across 50 countries, writing a few books, working with some of the biggest entertainers in the world, learning to meditate, and getting to create all the time – ideas, philosophies, recipes..

I feel that my purpose is to help others Realize Yourself (the tag line of my brand). Each and every one of us has only to uncover the beauty and power that is already there within. I am passionate about spreading health/beauty and authenticity through numerous elements that make up a holistic lifestyle.

MNB: So, word in the blogosphere is you …

Appear on a lot of morning TV segments, work with a lot of celebrities and am a New York Times bestselling author.

But I hope that people that read my writing and engage in my community can feel that I’m just like them! A friend that is simply spreading knowledge that I believe belongs to everyone (looking to nature as our teacher is one of my main tenets) and that I have been incredibly helped by this lifestyle as well. MNB: Have you always been passionate about healthy living? What was the ‘uh ha’ moment for you…

I was pretty healthy kid growing up. My parents never kept soda or candy in the house, and I never developed a taste for them. During college though, I fell (crashed!) off the wagon. I drank way too much beer and ate way too much late night pizza….so much so that by halfway in I had gained 20 pounds  (a lot for my smallish frame), had a face full of painfully embarrassing zits, had coarse, lifeless hair and had such low energy that I had to pump myself up with coffee and diet Coke all day long. Shortly after college I became serious about seeking the change I yearned for inside. I knew I couldn’t look and feel like that forever!

MNB: What does a typical day of MNB’ing [Move, Nourish, Believing] look like in your world?

I follow my Beauty Detox philosophy of course. Lots of Glowing Green Smoothies, fresh salads, quinoa, veggie-based meals. I am 100% plant-based, dairy-free and gluten-free.

MNB: Okay, so if you had to choose…what would be your top 3 ‘can’t live without’ foods of all time!

Ooh…tough! There are so many that I love!

Well I would have to say bananas, because I eat several of them every day, and I consider them perfect human food. If we were put out in the wild, we would all eat bananas all the time like our close genetic relatives the chimpanzees! They are energizing, low in fat and high in minerals.

Kale is another top food for me, as I love how dense it is, and how it doesn’t get soggy when I make a huge salad and keep it for lunch the next day. I do end up eating kale almost every day!

Quinoa is another one of my faves. It’s so versatile and I usually make a big batch of it at the beginning of the week and toss it into salads and with veggies to make easy meals all week long. It’s a super dense plant source of protein and minerals.

(Of course, if there was a fourth, who can live without dark chocolate?? I’m actually having my Happy Cow Hot Chocolate as I write this, which is a mix of almond milk and raw cacao. ☺)

I adore the Amy tights, thin-strapped bras like the Portia bra and the tanks…especially a red and white one I wear sooo much and that has been captured on Instagram multiple times! (doing yoga, hiking, at my smoothie and juice shop Glow Bio in LA…)

MNB: What are some healthy snacks we could find stashed in your handbag?

Actually, you’d be more likely find me with my handbag slung on my shoulder and a smoothie in my hand! I’m a smoothie-holic and I consider smoothies to be the perfect, easily digestible snack.
The blending process makes the foods’ nutrition more easily available to your system without digestive work. And smoothies are yummy! My Glowing Green Smoothie is a staple, but there are many I rotate in the mix. I love adding ingredients like mint, turmeric, raw cacao and acai into various other smoothies.

MNB: Best advice you have ever been given?

Focus on your efforts and what you can control, and don’t be attached to the results.
It’s so easy to obsess or get caught up in what-ifs or grasping for the next thing. This piece of advice has taken me a while to really apply to my own life, but now I try to keep this perspective in all my endeavours, and it makes the journey of each project infinitely more peaceful and fun.

MNB: Any Move, Nourish or Believe tips before we part? 

Start drinking my Glowing Green Smoothie to start your day. Made of green vegetables, fruit and lemon juice, it’s the ultimate fuel to make your skin glow, your energy soar, and help you maintain your healthy, ideal weight.

It’s easy to digest as it’s blended, so the vitamins, minerals, amino acids (to form protein in your body), antioxidants and fiber go right into your system to nourish you and help keep you feeling full and balanced. I and all my clients drink it as a staple of Beauty Detox.

Glowing Green Smoothie
Makes about 1.7 litres
I generally recommend starting out consuming around 500 ml of the Glowing Green Smoothie, and then working up to 700 ml or more (depending on your size, appetite, metabolism, and activity levels).

A Vitamix blender is definitely recommended to make this smoothie, so that it’s smooth, silky, and delicious in only a few minutes of prep time and cleanup – or another strong blender. The advantage of making a big batch like this one is time and convenience. Unlike juice, which has a short nutritional lifespan, the Glowing Green Smoothie will keep in your refrigerator, as long as it’s covered, for about three days. You can share it with your family or roommates, or have it yourself over that time period.

You can also freeze individual portion size containers and thaw it out the night before if you’re in a bind. Make sure plastic containers are BPA-free, which is a chemical that can tamper with hormones.

Note: I encourage you to mix and match your greens and fruit. Vary this recipe with kale, chard, arugula, and the like. Just avoid melons, as they are a specific type of fruit that digests better on their own.

INGREDIENTS
2 cups very cold, filtered water
7 cups spinach, chopped
6 cups chopped romaine lettuce
1½ cups chopped celery, about 2 stalks
1 apple, cored and chopped
1 pear, cored and chopped
1 banana
2 tbsp. fresh organic lemon juice

OPTIONAL INGREDIENTS
Ice cubes (If you prefer beverages on the colder side, but only add as few as you need)
1/2 cup of chopped organic cilantro
1/2 cup of chopped organic parsley

DIRECTIONS:
Add water, spinach and chopped romaine to the blender. Starting the blender on a low speed; mix until smooth.
Gradually move to higher speeds and add the herbs, celery, pear, and apple. Add the banana and lemon juice last.
Note: The reason I encourage blending the greens first is to ensure they have the most time to break down, as the fruit is made of simple sugars and water and doesn’t need to be blended as long.

MNB: Finally, If you were stranded on a deserted island, what would be the 3 things you would take?
  • My fiancé. He’s not a thing of course ☺ but I’d love to have him with me to share the amazing jungle life with…and maybe make jungle babies!
  • A coconut cleaver. So much easier to enjoy those divine cocos!
  • My journal. I love to write, can’t live without writing. If not for a journal I’d probably start carving tree bark or something.

On my around the world trip, I stayed on many tiny islands, throughout the Philippines, Malayasia, French Polynesia, etc. It was amazing to experience how little you needed to be so happy. One island in the Philippines where I once stayed was only occupied by nine fishing families, and you could walk around the whole island in half an hour. There was no running water or electricity. Just eating the coconuts and other island vegetation, playing with the jungle kids, swimming with all the tropical fish and star gazing as the ocean lulled under my bamboo hut at night was one of the most joyful experiences I’ve ever had.
